Dog Nose
So we all know that a dog uses their nose and it is very important for them to do so, but what makes a dog’s nose so special?
- The average dog has around 220 million scent receptors in his nose. We have around 5 million.
- The average dog has such acutely sensitive scenting ability that it can detect and identify smells that even the most sensitive instruments cannot measure.
- Scent is undoubted the most important of the dog’s practical senses, but also the most difficult for us to comprehend
- Dogs are being trained to help sniff out tumours in patients. They also are used at airports to sniff out explosives, drugs and food.
As we know there is more to dogs than just there scenting ability, dog’s play a huge part in our lives by us using that incredible nose of theirs. They are helping to save lives, finding lost people on mountains. They have been trained to detect if accelerants have been used in fires and if bombs have been left in luggage. They perform the work of ten people at times and I as a Dog Whisperer will continue to study, observe and admire the marvel of the dog. So why not try and hide some treats under pots in your garden and watch your dogs scenting ability at work, not only is this rewarding to watch, but it is very mental stimulating for your dog as well.
